Despite the fact that Nepal is dominated by only two main types of physical appearance – Mongoloid and Indian – the Nepalese women are quite different: Meanwhile, despite all the differences, all the Nepalese women have one physical quality uniting them all – there are no plump or fat Nepalese women. I have included his reinterpretation of the inscription in a footnote below. This correction shows how over the years, those interested in the art history of Nepal have made consistent strides to better our understanding of this important tradition. I felt it was important to publish this paper once again with this important correction.
Note that the article itself has been left as it was published, the notes in the text referring to the correction of the date are printed in red, and the added footnotes are printed in red-bordered box. Using the technique of dating by stylistic analysis, the art historian arrives at a date for a work of art through careful comparison with whatever dated material does exist, and often with material from neighboring traditions where the stylistic chronology is felt to be relatively securely established in the study of Nepalese art, the Indian traditions – naturally enough – are used as touchstones.
The basic assumption behind the use of such a dating technique is that the art tradition being studied exhibited a relatively uniform rate of stylistic progression; changes in style, though they occurred slowly, were progressive; stylistic elements were invented or borrowed, developed, employed more and more widely throughout the tradition, and in a final phase dropped or replaced by a new fashion.
In studying any image, the art historian examines general features such as proportions, stance, quality of work etc. These latter are often crucial in forming an opinion, as is attested by the drawings of jewelry and clothing styles sometimes found illustrating art historical studies [ 2 ]. These elements of style are then compared with equivalent elements found in dated sculpture or sculpture considered firmly dated on the basis of previous analysis, and the work of art being considered is then placed in a chronological continuum on the basis of this comparison.
Most art historians admit that intuition often plays a large part in this process, and all historians of Nepalese art caution that this system has serious shortcomings when applied to a tradition such as Nepal’s where limited documentation is combined with a length of continuous artistic production of at least years.
We shall further see how the products of the ancient and culturally complex Nepalese tradition often confound attempts at simple identification, and present the art historian with mysteries that defy easy solution. It is thus the third earliest dated example of Nepalese metalwork to come to light and the only dated example from the tenth century.

It reminded me of a conversation I had with Rabindra a while ago about this exact topic- co-sleeping between babies and parents. He said that in Nepal, all babies newborns included sleep in the same bed as their parents up until they are 1, 2 or even 3 years of age. Another thing I found interesting was what some might see as a sexist remark.
When we were in New Zealand, we saw a lot of fathers outdoors with their young children, without the mothers. Look- the dads are with their babies everywhere.

The lead researcher of this body and other remains said in that evidence ruled out cannibalism on the part of the ancient Nepalese people. The researchers, led by Mark S. Aldenderfer, also used radiocarbon dating to determine a rough estimate of the age of the remains. This is not the first skeleton found in the area, which is in Samdzong in the Upper Mustang District.
An article on Archaeology News Network says scientists have found cut marks, or possible signs of defleshing, on of 2, human bones found in the caves of Samdzong and Mebruk. That did not happen to these bodies, which he said were defleshed in a respectful way. Ancient Origins has featured several articles about defleshing practices among ancient and prehistoric peoples, some from as long ago as 7, years. In all these stories, researchers said the evidence did not point to cannibalism but rather preparing the body for death in a ritual way. Researchers discovered the Samdzong caves sites in , and found 10 burial shafts containing mostly collective graves.
